The Newton-Raphson method has no practical use in the real world

My diary from 1992 is full of gold. Here, I am stressing over the Bursary maths with statistics class. I’d heard it was easy, but I was massively struggling with it. I ended up switching to another class, but before I did that, I wondered…

What use is statistics?

For quite a long time, I naively thought that the stuff I learned in this class would benefit me in years to come. I couldn’t understand that it was purely academic.

What use will I have for the Newton-Raphson in 10 years time (when I’m 27)?

No use at all. In fact, I can’t even remember what it is or how it works. Even the Wikipedia page made my brain hurt.

Before I know it I’ll be 27.

Before I know it I’ll be 37.

I’ll know my Bursary results.

Lolz! I think got “did not complete” or whatever that was called back then, due to becoming hugely disillusioned with the education system and not showing up to any exams. If only the web had been around back then.

I might be married.

No.

I could even have kids!!!

No, and that would be weird, having a 10-year-old child now.

I really hope I get a partner for the ball this year. It was so depressing going alone last year.

OMG, miserable cow! I didn’t have a date for prom, but I went with a big group of friends and had a really fun time.
